PHILIPPINES: SIARGAO: Magpupungko Tidal Pool and Sugba Lagoon
September 04, 2018MAGPUPUNGKO TIDAL POOLS
All the way from General Luna where everyone is busy, I drove my way to Magpupungko Tidal Pool, a famous tourist destination in Siargao.
On my way, I passed by a beautiful scenery where I saw a gigantic rows of coconut trees.
There are some times that I need to stop just to stare at the sky, feel the gentle breeze and inhale fresh air.
You’ll not get lost because there are some signs on the road that you are almost on your destination. As you enter the place, you have to pay for the entrance fee which costs 50 pesos each. You’ll see various of eateries and food stalls inside so no need to worry about getting hungry before or after swimming and dipping into the pool.
The rock pools can be perfectly seen when it is low tide and an awesome spot for cliff jumping as the water is as clear as the crystal.
Take note: Check what time is the low tide first before going to Magpupungko. I heard from some tourists that they don’t allow people to go in the rock formations if it’s high tide as the current of the water is getting stronger.
The pools are few steps away from the seaside and you have to walk into the sharp rocks so make sure you are wearing thick sandals/aqua shoes to prevent you from having scratches or cutting the sole of your feet.
SUGBA LAGOON
Another main attraction in Siargao is the Sugba Lagoon. Considered as the second largest mangrove forest in Philippines and home of various marine and bird species.
From Magpupungko tidal pool, I drove my way going to the tourism office where I can ride the motor boat going to Sugba Lagoon. The boat costs 1,600 pesos (good up to 6 pax) and is back and forth. The boat ride takes 1 hour so sit back and relax.
You will dock in a two-storey viewing tower in the middle of the lagoon where you can hangout, eat and enjoy the view. Tables and chairs are available for rent and you can also order some foods or drinks there.

You can also enjoy and avail some of the activities that they offer at the lagoon such as snorkeling, kayaking, stand up paddle and you can also rent the bamboo raft. I tried SUP and rented the board for 200 pesos per hour.
You may also try to jump off the board that is about 3m above the water. The water is quite translucent so you’ll probably try to jump into it!
Just be careful when diving into the water as there are some jellyfish swimming around. They might be stingless or harmful.
These places can be reach with motorbike or you can book a tour in some shops or travel agencies around Siargao or in your hotel. You can also negotiate with some habal-habal drivers or tricycles roaming around the city.
